All of you people are misled. I am not really even a nascar fan, but my wife was viewing the site, and I was caught up in this soap opera that is going on here! The reason for all of the mourning is simple, He was a huge celebrity. The amount of mourning is simply based on how many people were aware of his existance because of His huge public exposure and popularity. Isn't is obvious that when a celebrity dies thousands of people who felt as if they knew them mourn for the loss. And when someone who knowbody knew dies there is no media coverage and very little mourning. You people who are writing in and complaining are smart enough to figure this out too. Why are you comparing a race car driver celebrity to some old time philosophers and people from times past. We all know those people are all equally important, after all if the trash man quits coming the country would stink! And we are equal in the sight of God. If lack have God in your heart you will go to heaven with the dead trash man and dead presidents. If you lack God you will go to the other place with other dead trash men and presidents!
