Dry days coming at Shelridge
Journal-Register
Thursday, August 05, 2026

For those who spend time on the fairways and greens, golf is a game of faith. Faith that tomorrow will be better and the game will come together. And this year, most of all, faith that August and September will be sunny and comfortable and DRY.

There is always hope. Certainly 2004 has been a washed-out season, with about eight inches of water just in July alone.

But it’s best to turn to what golf can be reported, including a full schedule for August.

Yesterday brought the once-postponed Ladies Fun Day (results to be in next week’s column).

And late July provided a 6-6-6 Tourney — that means six holes of scramble format, six holes of alternate shots (like the Ryder Cup) and six holes of best ball.

The results show Matt Bush and Mike Paul with 73-8-65 in a tie with Pete DiCureia and Paul Misiti who shot 79-14-65. Tied for second place were John Ford and Mark Rydza with 73-7-66 deadlocked with Cliff Braman and Dennis Flanagan with 83-17-66. In third place were Dave Bellucci and Jim Kingsley with 79-12-67.

n The August schedule shows a 4-man best ball test on the eigth, the one and only men’s Stag Day on the 11th (1 p.m. shotgun start and dinner), the Danna Memorial on the 20th, the Women’s Club Championship on the 21st, the visit of Lockport Town & Country Club for the interclub match on the 25th and the final match of the President’s Cup on a date to be set. For this head-to-head match play event, it will be Noel Ubiles vs. John Williams. So August can be busy and full of golf, God willing.

The Lockport Town & Country visit will be important because Shelridge is trailing by 5 points in the 2004 interclub rivalry. Seventy-two Shelridge members went to Lockport a month ago and came home with a deficit. “We have the trophy from last season and hope we can keep it,” said a member.

n Also scheduled in August is the regional contest on the national Buick Scramble to be held at Caledonia on the 13th. Hopefuls from Shelridge are Joe Opera, Mike Paul, Jim Rippe and John Williams along with the club pro, Joe Bertino, who automatically joins the group.
