The Niagara/Orleans Football Association is getting set to begin its sixth season of competition.
Area youngsters ranging in age from 7 to 14 are busy scrimmaging or cheering in preparation for the Aug. 28 season openers.
The opening round of games will have Holley at Medina (games at 4, 6 and 8 p.m.), Albion at Bar-Lyn (1, 3 and 5 p.m.), Pembroke at Akron (4, 6 and 8 p.m.) and Roy-Hart at New-Wil-Ran (1, 3 and 5 p.m.).
The association is the only area youth football league that operates in four counties. Each year more than 1,200 youngsters from Niagara, Orleans, Erie and Genesee counties compete for the honor of being crowned league champion. This year’s championship games will be held in Medina on Oct. 30 with the All-Star games at Holley on Nov. 6.
This year, many of the league’s youngsters will attend the Denver Broncos preseason game as guests of the Buffalo Bills. The Bills organization also is sponsoring a Youth Football Day in which two NOFA organizations will play at the “Ralph” and all of the youngsters will have the opportunity to participate in the NFL’s Punt, Pass & Kick competition.
In October, the Roy-Hart organization will be hosting the fifth annual CheerZone competition. CheerZone had become the crown jewel of youth cheerleading competitions with many outside organizations seeking an invitation to take part.
NOFA Chairman Tom Totaro added a special thanks to the Niagara and Orleans County Deputy Sheriff’s Associations for their continued support and generous donations to the organization. “Each dollar raised goes to offset the staggering cost of operating the league,” Totaro said. “This year, NOFA has dedicated the entire season to them.”
“Roster spots are filling up in all of our towns so if you want your kids to be part of an organized structured activity, visit any one of our practice fields as soon as possible,” Totaro said.
