Hall of Famers: Vaughn, King head the Class of 2004 honorees.

Medina High’s first two state champions, Eric Vaughn and Marcell King, head the 2004 class of inductees into the Mustangs Sports Hall of Fame.

Vaughn and King, who are both 1995 graduates, will be inducted Saturday night at the annual Block M Banquet along with two former Mustang coaches, Harvey Lyndaker and Bill Ames.

Vaughn capped off an outstanding scholastic wrestling career when he captured the state 167 pound championship after placing sixth as a junior.

A four-time Niagara Orleans League and two-time Section VI champion, he went 35-0 as a senior and finished with a then school record career mark of 166 wins.

Vaughn went on to become a three-time Division III All-American while wrestling at SUNY Brockport. He won the national title as a sophomore and placed second in both his junior and senior years.

On the baseball diamond, he helped to hit and hurl Medina to the N-O title his senior year. He had a 5-0 league pitching record that year while at the plate he hit .341 with three triples, three home runs and 15 RBIs. A three-year varsity starter, he earned first team N-O All-League honors in both his junior and senior years.

On the gridiron, Vaughn earned first team All-Division honors his senior year.

King likewise capped off an outstanding scholastic track career by winning the state triple jump title with a leap of 50-4 1/2 shattering his own Section VI record of 49-2 1/2. He also placed seventh in the long jump at the state meet.

The state meet appearance with the third for King who had placed second in the triple jump as a sophomore and ninth as a junior.

He was a triple winner at the Section VI state qualifier meet his senior year taking the triple jump (46-11 3/4), long jump (23- 1/4) and 400 (:49.9).

On the basketball court, King was a three-year varsity starter for Medina and helped lead the Mustangs to the N-O title in both his sophomore and junior seasons. He earned first team N-O All-League honors as a senior averaging 11.4 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. He was a second team All-league pick as a junior.

King was also a three-year varsity starter on the gridiron earning first team All-Division honors in both his junior and senior years.

Lyndaker is credited with getting the then fledgling Medina varsity wrestling program solidly on the ground. He came to MHS in 1959 as an agriculture teacher and wrestling coach and guided the Mustang matmen through the 1965 season. His Mustangs captured the Section VI Class A title in 1964.

Lyndaker also served as a wrestling official for many, many years retiring in 2001 after seven decades of involvement in the sport. He has served as president of the Western New York Officials Association.

Ames served as Medina varsity wrestling coach from 1966 to 1971 and again during the 1981-82 season. His Mustangs captured the N-O championship in both 1979 and 1971.

He also served as an assistant varsity wrestling coach under head coach John Loughlin from 1964 to 1970. The Mustangs won league titles in 1964 and 1970.

The Block M dinner will be held at the high school with dinner at 5:30 and the honors program at 6:30.

Bill Ames began his career as a standout athlete for Medina. He was an excellent football player and a credit to the school system. I coached with Bill and he not only showed a knowlege of the game, he knew how to handle kids to get them to perform to their highest level. Both Bill and Harvey are deserving of this honor...
