CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Albion High graduate Soren Johnson got the pitching start of his life on June 4.
Johnson was tabbed to take the mound for St. Bonaventure in the first round of the NCAA playoffs against the University of Miami on the Hurricanes home field.
“The stands were packed and when I went out to the mound I felt like I was 800 feet from home plate. They were calling me Forrest Gump and everything but it was an experience. It was a once in a life time experience,” said Johnson by phone from his hotel in Miami.
Johnson, who has heard the Forrest Gump calls all season as the result of bulky braces he wears on both knees because of ACL injuries, pitched the first four innings in the Bonnies 6-3 loss to the Hurricanes.
“We got the first two outs quick in the first inning and I think things would have been different if we could have gotten the third out quickly as they got a couple of hits and a run,” said Johnson. “It took us a while to get going as I think everyone was nervous. We played with them but their defense was amazing.”
St. Bona was eliminated from the tourney by Florida Atlantic 14-2 on June 5.
