Arbor Day in Medina

Consider planting a tree an investment for the future.
Although we may not see the benefits of a tree in our lifetime, someone will someday.
ÒIn the future it will be something to be enjoyed by the people of Medina,Ó said Medina Canal Task Force Member Marty Busch.
And thatÕs the idea behind the Canal Task ForceÕs celebration of Arbor Day.
While the official state holiday falls on April 29 Ñ different states celebrate it on different days Ñ Medina decided to get an early start this year. On Friday, in a small celebration in LionÕs Park, the Canal Task Force planted a beech tree and a sycamore tree on the north side of the canal.
The trees were funded by $200 and $300 donations, made by Legislator-at-Large David Callard and his wife, Nelda, and the Medina Railroad Museum, respectively.
Thanks to donations like these, the Canal Task Force has been able to continue the celebration for five years, Busch said.
ÒPeople have been very generous doing that,Ó Busch said.
Callard said he and his wife wanted to find a way to benefit the county. The couple decided to start contributing trees around the county. This was the CallardsÕ first contribution.
ÒI think it adds to the overall beauty of the county,Ó David Callard said. ÒItÕs symbolic of strength in the community and county.Ó
Callard said the trees help add beauty to the area.
Marty Phelps, director of the Medina Railroad Museum, said the museumÕs board wanted to come up with a way to give something to the community. The board thought donating a tree would be a good way to try and to inspire others to get involved in the community, Phelps said.
The project was a joint community effort, with the Department of Public Works digging the holes for the trees and the Fire Department providing water.
Planting more trees in the community is a project of the newly established Tree Board, under the direction of village planning board vice-chair Chris Busch, which oversees tree planting in the community is done in a way to best ensure the proper growth of the trees. Celebrating Arbor Day and the establishment of a tree board are two steps that should help the village secure a state grant for tree planting, Busch said.
