Roy-Hart voters give thumbs-up to budget

MIDDLEPORT — Voters in the Royalton-Hartland Central School district passed a $20.33 million budget Wednesday in a second vote.

The slightly modified budget, which passed 827-501, cut $62,500 in miscellaneous equipment and sports uniforms from the failed budget.

Superintendent Paul Bona credited the community with the outcome, saying he thought a lot of people came out to vote.

“I’m very happy, on behalf of our students, our faculty, our staff and our community, for the new budget,” he said.

Had the budget failed again, the district would’ve gone to a contingenct budget, an action that would remove funding for sports.

Gasport resident Eric McElwain is a Roy-Hart graduate and voted in favor of the budget because he didn’t want to see sports cut.

“I was a student here and I think it would help the students out,” he said. “Sports are a huge part of being a student.”

As a student at Roy-Hart of course there was a piece of me that wanted the budget to pass, but then there was a part of me that said why should it pass. The community is lied to and practically shot down by the superintendent. He calls us small town, closes public meetings at the last minute, and fires some of our best teachers. So, I felt that it was time for a change and for him to be shot down, and for the budget to be shot down. We were told by our principal, athletic director, and our superintendent that if it was voted down that that would be our last chance and there would be no sports at Roy-Hart. When they were asked why we couldn't raise the money they told us that it was way too much money and that Roy-Hart couldn't start a Boosters club because we weren't Starpoint and we couldn't do it. So, I figured that if the budget got voted down then we could show them that we could do it. So, not everyone in the Roy-Hart area gives a thumb-up to the budget. Many give a thumbs down, and if there weren't meetings that were held by our superintendent and the athletic director telling the kids to call everyone they know and tell them to vote down the budget, and making signs that said things about how terrible it would be, then I bet you that that budget would have gotten voted down!!!

As a resident of the district, I am so sick of Roy-Hart's budget always being defeated. As a homeowner soon to be selling my home, the first thing a family thinks about is the school district for their children. What kind of image are we sending when we constantly turn down budgets and appear on the front page for every stupid little issue? I am hoping I can sell my home!

The school district still needs to be aware that the community is still very concerned with actions that the BOE is taking in different areas. The reason that this budget passed is that the community did not want the students' experiences at Roy-Hart to be severely marred next year. There are still serious issues that the BOE and superintendent need to redress with the community.
