Volunteerism has been in full force at the Outwater Park football house.
As crews from Lafarge, a local stone company, poured donated concrete, Steve Calhoun, president of the Lockport Little Loop football board of directors, worked in the blazing sun late last week to smooth it into a pad and walkway outside the concession stand. The mens’ goal was to have the work done in time for the league’s first home games Saturday.
Though it’s city property, an informal agreement with the union representing parks workers is allowing needed work to get done quickly and less expensively. AFSCME’s local agreed to let Little Loop volunteers take on tasks like interior wall installation, painting, roofing and concrete work, using donated materials, and parks crews are assisting in other chores like dumping stone and clearing away old roofing materials, Mayor Michael Tucker said.
The league’s informal partnership with the city is a blessing for local kids, says Steve Calhoun, president of the Little Loop board of directors.
“They’re backing us up, helping us out. We’re truly grateful,” he said.
