Dean apologizes for Maziarz comments

WILSON -- Town Supervisor Jerry Dean apologized Monday for comments he made about state Sen. George Maziarz during a WLVL radio show last week.

Dean called Scott Leffler's show "Dialog" on Sept. 27, and after speaking about state funding for local projects, asked Leffler when Maziarz was getting married.

When Leffler said he didn't know, Dean added, "I know Elton John got married, too."

Late Monday evening, Dean issued an apology.

"It was totally inappropriate and I am sorry for any harm that I may have caused the senator and his family." Dean said. "Throughout his many years in public service, the senator has always been extremely supportive of the Town and Village of Wilson. I continue to have the best interests and betterment of the Wilson community as my primary goal in my capacity as town supervisor.

"I will be contacting the senator personally to extend my apology."

Dean's comments created something of a stir in the Wilson community, and other town officials had mixed reactions.

Board member Brad Clark didn't listen to the broadcast, but he heard about it around town.

Clark said he called the senator about the issue and believes the relationship between the board and Maziarz wasn't damaged by Dean's comments.

"He knows Jerry. He might not understand where the stuff comes from, but he knows him," said Clark.

Board member Bruce Muck hopes this doesn't reflect negatively on the town.

"He's just speaking for himself," said Muck. "I don't know what he said. I didn't hear it. It's not my thing to apologize for. We all feel (the effects), but we certainly didn't encourage it. We didn't endorse it."
