New Castle High just a memory
Staff, New Castle News
All thats left of New Castle Senior High is a pile of wood, rocks, dirt and bricks.
The 93-year-old school felt its final blow June 22 as the last remains were torn down.
In 1907, the board of education made plans for a new senior high school, as the junior and senior high school students were crowded into the former East and North Street schools. The site of the new senior high was debated, but it was agreed it should be in the heart of the city.
The board purchased property on Lincoln Avenue and Reis Street, and W.G. Eckles drew up plans for a new high school.
The new school was scheduled to open Sept. 6, 1911, but in August, the building was far from finished.
The Eckles company said it would be possible to finish rooms on the second and third floors on time. Also, a sewer problem was temporarily fixed, but some students attended in the morning and others in the afternoon for the first few weeks of school.
New Castle Senior High School opened its doors on Sept. 11, 1911, as one of the most modern schools of its time. The concrete and steel building had brick walls and many windows. It had large halls and classrooms, but soon became crowded as more families moved to New Castle.
The new red brick high school, designed by Eckles Architecture in New Castle, is built on the same land as the former school. The architectural firm specializes in architecture for education by providing services to its clients and coordinating with state departments of education.

Terry (6/25/2004) Now if only they could knock down the political corruption that has crippled New Castle and the School District and I understand now the County. New Castle could possibly survive, but I doubt that will happen.
(6/24/2004) Hey there New Castle, where is your ingenuity? The bricks from the building should be sold to raise funds for your ailing city government. Many have probably stolen already and will be offered for sale on ebay!
Candy (Valentine) Hall (6/24/2004) How sad to hear that the high school has been torn down. I don't live in New Castle anymore but was born there. Doesn't New Castle have an Historical Society? Nothing of historical value ever seems to be perserved there.
