Tommy Moose has come to town to comfort little children.

As part of the National Loyal Order of the Moose effort, New Castle Moose Lodge No. 51 has distributed Tommy Moose small, furry, red-shirted stuffed moose animals to area police and fire departments and ambulance services.

These little moose are designed to comfort children in distressed and traumatic situations.

Betty and Gordon North, co-chairpersons of community services, oversaw the moose distributions.

The spotlight will be shining on a Union Middle School sixth-grader on Aug. 24 at PNC Park.

Lauren Minenok,11, will sing the National Anthem prior to the Pittsburgh Pirates game that night against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

According to Laurens mom, the youngster was one of more than 2,400 people who sent in an audition tape for 15 open dates to sing.

Lauren is a two-year year member of the New Castle Playhouse Mini Stars. She has performed in playhouse productions since she was 5, including The Sound of Music, Christmas Spectacular, Annie, Alice in Wonderland and Scrooge.

She also performed the National Anthem during the 2003-04 basketball season for Union high basketball team.

Other team for which she has performed the same duty include the Slippery Rock University mens basketball and baseball teams, the Youngstown Phantoms semi-pro hockey team and the Steel City Sparks women's semi-pro soccer team.

On several occasions she also has sung with the Manhattan Band in the New Castle/Sharon area as well as with Union High School band director Chris Masi at community dedications and ceremonies.

Lauren is the daughter of Pat and Roberta Minenok of New Castle.

Mary Glenn of Neshannock Township brought us up to speed about someone dear to her heart.

Her grandson, Timothy Glatfelter, 21, and his friend, Ryan Nelson, both from Spring Grove, Pa., bicycled from San Francisco to Cape Cod to raise money for the American Heart Association.

Their trip ended July 12 after six weeks and two days of pedaling.

Before they left, they raised $10,000 in sponsors.

During their 45-day trek, they wore Cycling for the Heart T-shirts, identifying their cause.

It was up and down mountains and across the desert, explained Glenn who said they camped out, stayed in hotels and sometimes people took them in.

This is the first time that the pair of pedal pushers ever went cross country.

What spurred them on is the other boys father did it 30 years ago Glenn said.

Her grandson is entering his third year at Albright College in Reading. His pal is a student at Dickinson Law School in Carlisle.

The concerned grandmother is proud of the accomplishment and thankful the trip ended safely.

To be truthful, I was worried with the world the way it is today. But they got through it and I feel great they accomplished what they set out to do.

Now theyre home and theyre board.

Timothys parents are George and Beverly Glenn Glatfelter of Spring Grove. His mother is formerly from New Castle.

The summer newsletter of the Lawrence County Historical Society mentions the progress done to the grounds by volunteers who have been working hard at weeding, planting, trimming and spreading mulch.

Anyone who would like to donate some perennials to the effort, may do so. Help planting them also would be appreciated.
