Tanner fans to get their fill of coverage next week
By Kayleen Cubbal

Ever wonder how Chuck Tanner got his start in sports?

How he came to wear the uniform number 7?

How legendary New Castle High football coach Lindy Lauro may have changed the course of history in Tanners life?

Those and many other never-answered questions about the man who led the Pittsburgh Pirates to the 1979 World Series championship will be addressed next week in The News.

In conjunction with tomorrows Chuck Tanner Field Dedication celebration at Shenango High School, the News will begin a five-part series on Tanners life.

Monday, of course, will be dedicated to complete coverage of tomorrows dedication.

Starting Tuesday and running through Aug. 7, Tanners life will be chronicled, from his start on the sandlot fields of New Castle, to his minor and major league playing and managing careers, to the days since he retired from baseball in 1988. Included will be some never-seen photos of Tanners life and family.

Speaking of the dedication, the Tanner monument has arrived at the Shenango High football field (it will remain covered until the ceremony). Tanner has received confirmation that New Castle native Jack Zduriencik, director of scouting for the Milwaukee Brewers, will attend. Manny Sanguillen, another hero of the 79 World Series, has indicated to Tanner he may attend as well.

Barbara Babs Tanner, Chucks wife of more than 50 years, will be among the family members attending.

High school football

Dont look now, but high school football season is just around the corner.

Camps for District 7 (WPIAL) schools open Aug. 9, a week from Monday. Because Wilmington competes in District 10, its camp doesnt open until Aug. 16.

Opening night games for WPIAL teams are just four weeks from tonight, with Kittanning at New Castle, South Side Beaver at Laurel, Farrell at Ellwood City, Mohawk at Freedom, Union at Springdale and Neshannock at Canevin Catholic.

On Aug. 28, Shenango hosts Western Beaver.

Wilmington opens Sept. 3 at Northwestern, which is located near Edinboro.

Hats off to Marmo

Kudos to Nick Marmo, whose tenacity has earned him a second chance with the Penn State University football team.

The New Castle High product, who has seen limited playing time throughout his career as an offensive lineman with the Nittany Lions, was one of three fifth-year seniors told by head coach Joe Paterno in March that it was time to get on with it.

But Marmo persisted, remaining in University Park and working out to keep himself in shape, all the while making certain he remained within Paternos sight.

Finally last week, after listening to Marmo plead his case once again, Paterno reconsidered and told Marmo to report for training camp in August.

Marmo, who is closing in on his degree in kinesiology, will continue to receive financial aid, thus enabling him to do his student teaching in the spring so that he can receive a teaching degree.

Calling all sandlot teams

So you want to be in pictures?

Nows your chance.

The New Castle News is accepting photos of any summer sandlot teams that wish to have a photo published.

You dont have to have won a championship, although title teams will be included.

The photos will run, free of charge, in our Sandlot Stars tabloid which will be published Aug. 17.

Clear 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 photos should be submitted to Bryan Zeigler, c/o New Castle News, 27 N. Mercer St., New Castle, PA 16101.

The deadline for photos to be submitted is Aug. 10.
