NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — A state-of-the-art cable car system will begin operating in 2005 along the Niagara Gorge between the brink of the falls and the Maid of the Mist landing.
The $23-million project — first proposed more than two years ago — was unveiled during a press briefing Tuesday by Jim Bradley, the Ontario minister of tourism and recreation, and Niagara Parks Commission officials.
“We’re convinced that we’ve found another authentic experience that will enhance visitors’ enjoyment and understanding of the parks,” said Parks Commission Chairman Jim Williams.
The new attraction featuring eight-passenger, glass-enclosed gondolas will transport tourists 1,160 feet from the second level of Table Rock House, at the edge of the Horseshoe Falls, to the Maid of the Mist landing at the base of Clifton Hill.
Starting at the top of the 200-foot gorge, the gondola will drop about 120 feet during the 12-minute ride, affording an unmatched view of the American and Canadian falls. The year-round trip can be operated day and night.
