Totot Again Hit by Fire
By Greg Lenburg
TOTO An early morning Monday fire destroyed part of the retail store at Richards of Toto and all of the restaurant.
Bass Lake Fire Chief Phil Banasiak said the fire was believed to have started at the front door near a cash register.
Firefighters were able to save the adjoining half of the retail store.
It had a fire door, Banasiak said.
As of 11:30 a.m. some firefighters were still at the scene removing debris. Also at the scene was the state fire marshal who was investigating the cause of the fire.
According to Banasiak, more than 100 firefighters, including representatives from all Starke County fire departments battled the fire, using some 25 pieces of equipment.
The fire broke out around 4:10 a.m.
It took firefighters 11/2 hours to contain it.
According to Banasiak, the retail store was built some six to seven years ago. The restaurant opened a year ago after the original cafe was expanded.
The cafe, according to Doug Juicy Cassel, communications officer with the Bass Lake Volunteer Fire Department, has been there for e-ons.
The cause of Richards fire was undetermined, at press time.
