Naming new little one part of the fun

This past July, I shared in this column that our middle child, Adrienne, is expecting.

At the same time I talked about the rivalry that has existed for years between Adrienne and our oldest child, Jocelyn. Once again, it reared its head this week.

Both Jocelyn and Adrienne have always wanted their first child to be a girl. From the time they were little playing house, theyd picked out their first babys name and they made each other vow to never steal it no matter who produced the first infant girl.

Adrienne has the notoriety of producing our first grandchild next February. And this past Tuesday she raised the bar even higher. In a routine ultrasound when asked if they wanted to know the sex of the baby, they said yes. According to the nurse conducting the test, there was no question. Its a girl.

Upon hearing the news, Jocelyn was quick to remind the expectant mother that the name Kierstan Elizabeth is off limits! She can name the child anything but this.

Jocelyn, whose wedding is three weeks from tomorrow, is a bit high-strung of late. Since shes chosen to have the ceremony outside, weather is the big issue. When she read recently that the Farmers Almanac is calling for snow flurries the beginning of the third week in October, she nearly fainted. We have a backup plan to move it all indoors if necessary, but that is of no matter right now. This normally laid-back kid stresses over most anything of late. And the news of a baby girl on the way seemed to add to the drama. But then Adrienne is nothing if not dramatic.

So what about the impending grandmother? She couldnt be happier. I love little girls. I love little boys too, but I really wanted this first one to be a girl as well.

Adrienne, like Jocelyn, had a girls name selected when she was little. None of us can remember it now. So theyre kicking around Isabelle and Gillian. With the last name of Greth, they have to be careful. No Beth Greth or Seth Greth.

It was always my goal to name my children something that couldnt be shortened, wouldnt be open for the creation of a nickname. I also didnt want them to have names that they would constantly run in to. Through 12 years of school, there was one other Jocelyn and only one Adrienne, ours. With two years left to go, Ross hasnt run into any other Rosses either.

My latest challenge, as I await the arrival, is not to buy all that is pink. There will be plenty of time to do that.

I also keep reminding myself of one thing. How many little ones out there ended up being a surprise?

Somehow, I dont think the new parents would appreciate a little Jackson Greth in a pink sleeper.
