Two Semis Crash on US 30
By Stacey Creasy
PLYMOUTH The US 30 and Oak Road intersection is one of the most dangerous crossings in Plymouth. Each year it makes the police departments annual list of the Dirty Dozen most dangerous intersections.
There was another accident at the intersection Wednesday involving two semi trucks.
The crash occurred about 2:55 p.m. Sgt. David Bacon of the Plymouth Police Department reported William R. Lange, 40 of Sullivan, Ohio, was driving his semi truck east bound on US 30 when he struck the rear end of another semi driven by Leopoldo Barboza Jr., 32, of Chicago.
Barboza, who was also east bound on US 30, told police he had just pulled through the intersection when he was struck by Lange, who said he may have fallen asleep behind the wheel briefly, woken up and did not realize he was approaching the intersection.
Both semis were seriously damaged. Langes rig was totaled. He was transported to St. Josephs Regional Medical Center for injuries he suffered in the crash. His condition was not known at press time, but investigators said his injuries were not life-threatening.
The crash did force police to re-route traffic around the intersection for more than two hours.
A few hours later there was another accident near the US 30-Oak Road intersection. A report on that crash was not available at press time.
A number of measures have been taken in recent years to reduce accidents at Oak Road and US 30. The speed limit has been decreased, rumble strips have been put in and additional warning lights and signs have been erected.
Still, each year the crossing ranks in the top three on the Dirty Dozen list.
