BOURBON If Tritons boys cross country team can continue to run at the pace it ran Thursday, next weeks Northern State Conference meet could be very interesting for Trojans fans.
Coach Curt Krefts squad placed five runners in the top 10 to win the Marshall County cross country meet with 29 points. Culver Academy was second with 49 points, followed by Plymouth (70), John Glenn (94), Bremen (131) and LaVille.
On the girls side, coach Allen Shockneys Lady Pil-grims scored 46 points to edge runner-up John Glenn, who finished with 54 points. Bremen finished third with 61 points, followed by Triton (86) and Culver Academy (109).
I thought they did a nice job, Kreft said. This team is a completely different team than last year. We lost five of the top seven and this is basically a new team. Theyve worked very hard and Im very pleased for them.
And the margin of victory was surprising even to Kreft.
I thought it would be very competitive with Culver Academy, he said. And I thought we could run well. But I didnt expect to run that well. To run five in the top 10 is excellent.
Leading the way for the Trojans was Adam Wane-macher. He was the individual champion with a time of 16:54.
He returns after being our No. 4 or 5 runner last year, Kreft said. Hes not naturally a runner. Basketball is his first love and this is his third year and hes decided I can run with those kids. Hes a kid when he puts it in his mind, can accomplish a lot of things.
Following Wanemacher was Tate Chapman (seventh, 17:41), Blake Harrison (eighth, 17:46) and Cory McClarnon (ninth, 17:52).
We had a solid pack, but I think their training is now catching up with them, Kreft said. They didnt have a great summer, so theyre a little behind everybody else. And now were getting into some pretty good workouts and theyve been handling them pretty well. Were getting in some speedwork now and theyre coming along.
Our Nos. 4 and 5, they have stepped it up. Im very pleased. If they can continue this the next few weeks, well do well.
Krefts next step is to find a way for his team to come away champions at next weeks Northern State Conference meet.
New Prairie is awesome, he said. Theyve got three solid runners. Weve just got to run competitive with them and were going to be smart and focused. But this (meet) should give us a lot of confidence.
Shockney watched his team turn in a fine effort. Leading the way for Plymouth was Mark Byelick. Byelick finished third in 17:16.
We dont have a front pack, but it is whoever is in the mix, Shockney said. And we know that second group after Mark is going to be Matt (Summerlot) or it is going to be Darren (Smith).
Smith finished 12th in 17:58 and Summerlot was 13th in 18:02. Rob Portteus was 15th (18:03), Eric Manson (27th, 18:50) and Wyatt Huff (30th, 18:54).
Rob sets the pace for the second pack, Shockney said. And he puts himself in jeopardy by doing so. But it helps in the long run by helping the guys.
In the girls race, Kreft also had an individual winner as Emily Gephart won in 16:01.
We knew the Plymouth girl was good, Kreft said. And we figured the Fry girls would be right there. I dont think she (Gephart) thought that she could do this. And I was real pleased to see her go out there and run that.
Shockney saw his girls find a way to win the team title. Leading the way was Stephanie Slemp. Slemp finished second in 16:05. Megan Holzwart finished sixth (16:57) and Sajeena Horvath eighth (17:08).
Stephanie is the team leader and shes consistent, Shockney said. Megan is a solid No. 2 and freshman Sajeena Horvath is really coming on. She is still trying to know mentally where she is during the race. She has the ability to move up.
Also placing for Plymouth were Bryttin Youst (13th, 17:18), Ashley Howard (17th, 17:34), Vera Zadorozhnaya (20th, 18:02), Melissa Walder (23rd, 18:22), Sunita Horvath (24th, 18:23), Hillary Slemp (25th, 18:35), Shannon Gehrke (31st, 19:04), Taryn Holt (38th, 19:43), Danielle Beasley (45th, 20:42), Leslie Houin (48th, 21:15), Veronica Smiley (50th 21:43), Sania Rana (54th, 23:55) and Kristina Gray (55th, 25:13).
Coach Mike Clarks John Glenn squad turned in a fine effort and should be one of the top teams at next weeks NSC meet. Lonna Fry led the way with a fourth place, 16:31 finish. Fry was followed by Aimee Sheaks (ninth, 17:08), Sarah Gapinski (10th, 17:13), Sarah Emerick (12th, 17:15), Jessica Foresman (19th, 17:58), Kristin Kunnen (21st, 18:13), Karlyn Stull (27th, 18:50), Kristin Browne (33rd, 19:18), Marcia Miller (46th, 21:09) and Melissa Clark (51st, 22:22).
Plymouth will be at the Northern Lakes Conference meet next Thursday while everyone else but Culver Academy will be at the Northern State Conference meet at New Prairie.
