Rules Change in Donations for Dillon
By Stacey Creasy
BOURBON Donations made to the Bourbon National Bank for Dillon Greene will be used to help pay medical costs.
Dillon, a seven-year-old second grader at Triton, is battling meddulloblastoma (brain cancer).
However, some of the other fund-raising efforts for Dillon, such as the cans placed in the Bourbon area and a chicken sale fund raiser planned for Oct. 19, have been canceled.
There are some concerns that the funds being raised for Dillon are not being used the way they are supposed to be, said Rebecca Wampler, who operates First Step Daycare in Bourbon.
Wampler is the one of the people who noticed some of Dillons early signs.
The cancer affects Dillons coordination, including his vision and speech.
Prior to this summer, Dillon was a busy boy who was on the go all the time. The type of energetic seven-year-old you find in every small town in every rural county across America.
Dillons father, Mark Greene, said over the summer Dillon complained of headaches from time to time, but nothing out of the ordinary. His parents did not become suspicious or concerned until they approached the beginning of the school year.
He had headaches and sometimes threw up, Wampler said in a previous interview. But he was very nervous about school so we thought that was the problem.
When Wampler sat Dillon down to find out why he was so nervous about school he told her; Im not going to pass. I see two of everything.
Dillons parents took their son to an optometrist who noticed Dillon had a swollen optic nerve. He was then taken to a hospital in Elkhart and given an MRI.
That is when they discovered a mass on Dillons brain.
Dillons doctors and his family did not waste anytime attacking the cancer. He was driven via ambulance from Elkhart to Rileys Children Hospital the next day and underwent surgery the day after that.
His surgery was on Nov. 9. Since then the community has rallied behind Dillon and his family.
Dillon is home from Rileys.
He is walking and talking some, Wampler stated. He will have chemo and radiation treatments for the next 30 days.
Wampler and those people who helped set up the fund for Dillon at First State Bank in Bourbon cans still send donations to; P.O. Box 2, Bourbon, In. 46504.
We still want to do what we can to help Dillon, Wampler added. Donations sent to the bank will be used for Dillons medical bills. We will see to that.
