Can you help Project HELP?

By Holly Heller

BREMEN For hundreds of local residents struggling through difficult financial times, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

That light is called Project HELP, and this holiday season it will shine brightly for the 21st year.

The mission of the group is to help Bremen and German Township families get over hurdles in every day living, in a loving and nonjudgemental way.

Last year, 95 families made up of 337 individuals received a total of 128 large boxes of groceries, delivered to their door by Project HELP volunteers.

This year, volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 7 in the red, heated pole building situated near the wastewater treatment plant at the west end of Dewey Street, where they will sort donated grocery items and pack them in large boxes.

On Saturday, Dec. 8 at 9 a.m., those boxes will be delivered to local families in need by a second group of volunteers.

Project HELP was founded in 1981 with a $10,000 donation from Woodie Schramm and volunteer leadership of Wilbur Bowser and Dick Leeper.

That year, volunteers came together to collect, sort, pack and distribute boxes of grocery items all in the course of one day. In 1986, the project developed into a two-day event, with delivery handled on the second day. It has remained such since.

Weve delivered roughly 100 food boxes every December since then, Bowser said. We have a lot of people helping us, and each one sort of does his or her own thing, and it always gets done.

In addition to the Christmas food baskets, Project HELP operates year-round by helping pay utility bills and rent for those enduring difficult financial times.
