Any day now, Starke Circuit Court Judge David Matsey is expected to officially order a recount in the Starke County Council District 4 race
In that contest, 18-year-old Republican newcomer Mark Mackillop gave Democrat incumbent Bruce Fingerhut a serious challenge.
In fact, when the ballots were counted on election night, Fingerhut escaped with a two-vote victory, 815-813.
With the margin of victory so close, Mackillop was compelled to request a recount.
The race is also a first for Starke County Clerk Rhonda Milner. The county clerks office is in charge of conducting elections.
Ive never had a recount before, said Milner.
She explained the process: The judge (Matsey) will appoint one person from each party, Milner said. There will be one mechanic appointed to open the machines.
The one person from each party will recount the votes and match the ballots to the machines. Milner believes the recount should take less than a day.
Matsey had to delay his decision until this week because Friday was the deadline for anyone to file for a recount in the 2002 election. Only Mackillop filed.
He had a jury trial Monday and Tuesday, Milner said of the judges decision to schedule the recount. I think he will set up the recount soon.
