Starke Recount Ordered

Pilot News Staff Report

KNOX The recount is on.

As expected, Starke Circuit Court Judge David P. Matsey has officially ordered a recount in the Starke County Council District 4 race.

On Election Day Democrat, Bruce Fingerhut escaped with a two-vote victory over challenger Mark Mack-illop in one of the tightest county races in Michiana in recent years.

Fingerhut collected 815 votes while Mackillop received 813 votes.

Matsey granted the recount after Mackillop requested it.

On Tuesday, Matsey appointed Democrat James Henriott and Republican Michael Casey to handle the actual recounting of the ballots.

Eli Roscka will be the mechanic in the recount process.

The recount is a first for Starke County Clerk Rhonda Milner, whose office is in charge of conducting elections.

Milner explained how the recount process will work.

State law mandates one person from each party is appointed to count he ballots. A mechanic is appointed to remove the ballots from the machine.

The appointed person from each party will recount the votes and match the ballots to the machines. Milner believes the recount should take less than a day since we are talking about approximately 1,628 votes.

No date has been announced, but Starke County officials are hoping to conduct the recount during the first week of December.

The winner from the recount will be sworn into office Jan. 1.
