Police Pursuit Policy Under Review

By Michele Ginder

Knox Leader

KNOX The Knox City Council met this week to discuss the Main Street Extension, city hall renovations, the revised Knox police pursuit policy and the request for police officer over time.

The revised police pursuit policy would allow police officers to continue a chase outside of the city limits, as well as assist another agency when an ongoing pursuit has entered the Knox City jurisdiction.

Police Chief Rick Chambers said the city has always had a pursuit policy but the city legal department just wanted a more precisely worded version in place.

The city attorney simply wants a policy that covers everything, Chambers said.

So my one-page policy is now a six-page policy and it is being reviewed.

The Knox police would never cut off a pursuit simply because it extended past city limits; the call for assists from state police as well as bordering jurisdictions would also be in effect.

The council also granted police Chief Chambers request for police officer over time.

Greg Smith and Wes Down-ing, from the Bonar Group, were there to answer questions concerning the cost of the Main Street Extension.

The extension will connect Clabaugh to County Road 150, and will consist of new asphalt, gutters and sidewalks on both side of the road.

The cost for the project is approximately $1.4 million. The federal government pays 80 percent of the cost and 20 percent is the responsibility of the City of Knox.

The contracts for the Main Street extension are still being reviewed; once approved, the actual road construction will begin within a year.

Van Jonovic from territorial engineering prioritized the list of repairs for City hall.

His list consists of repairing the windows, overhead doors, downspouts and cleaning.

With so many choices of building materials to repair the various problems, Mayor Nancy Dembowski appointed a full council committee to meet in January to decide what materials will be used.
