There's Still Time
I celebrate Christmas with a special zeal.
Maybe its because I believe in magic and Christmas is about as magical as it gets.
Theres something about the season that transcends the religious beliefs and the pretty lights, though those are both equally anticipated as accepted.
Part of the magic for me has always been in the giving. Giving of thanks for
surviving another year.
For hope. For family. For plans.
Its not too late for you to catch the wave. The easiest way is to join Santas team.
Every year, churches and other special organizations like the Marines and neighborhood center hang wish tags on trees for children. They want one toy. Thats all. Id bet the toy costs less than most people spend to fill up their car before setting out to buy whatever they can afford to buy for family and friends.
But imagine being that one child who wants one toy and really, more than likely, doesnt expect to get it.
But you can fill that little soul with realized joy.
OK. Heres to the teenagers who read us:
One toy will cost less than an admission to a movie. It will be more fun than just another weekend at the cinema. It will last longer and have more impact on the giver as well as the receiver than whatever viewing option you had decided upon for this week.
Guess what? The movie will still be showing next week or, guaranteed, will pop up on your home DVD sooner than next Christmas.
But the child who gets your gift, from someone who doesnt even know him and will likely never meet him, that gift carries meaning far beyond what any of us can comprehend.
Heres another idea: Stick a pair of those one-size-fits-all gloves to the toy. Everyone needs gloves.
These giving trees are not hard to locate.
K Mart has one in Plymouth. Call a church, call a school, call the police . . . they all know where you can get a wish that needs to be filled this week.
Talk about your instant gratification.
As soon as you buy the present and deliver it to the proper agency, you have started the magic.
And how many times can you truly know youve made a wish come true?
