All Fired Up for 2003
We have this tradition.
Instead of making New Years resolutions into a wish list, we burn our old bad habits
Literally.
The family and I have a fire in the fireplace some years, its the only fire we have and those of us who can write are required to have at least five things we wish to eliminate from our lives. The rest of us will help Mikayla come up with her wishes, but she has to agree without being coerced.
You read your wish aloud then fling it into the fire and it joins the last ashes of 2002.
Does it work? I dunno.
I have been trying to burn my exasperation for some years now.
Ill try again.
Ill also try to burn some bad habits, like a lack of patience at times.
This has been a great year for me. I changed jobs. At this time last year, I was unhappily cycling through an endless system of bonking into unchangeable entities . . . Because thats the way we have always done it.
As 2003 dawns, I am in a challenging job with a great team here. All we have to do is keep moving forward.
The folks that come to see me seem to like what were doing. They want to see more, but they like what weve done in the few short months since this editorial team became a reality.
Thats a nice feeling. We have laid a groundwork.
The sports staff, for instance, has tuned the corner on inclusion rather than selective exclusion. I have had so many parents and athletes and coaches tell me theyve never been covered by TThe Pilot News before and they like the way we write and take pictures.
The politicians, even, seem to appreciate our focus on issues. They dont always agree with the need to write about everything, but they like the idea someone is paying attention.
The business community has responded to our willingness to cover grand openings and renovations.
Schools have always been a favorite area of focus for me, wherever Ive worked. I like running the honor rolls, but I like running stories of students trying to achieve even better. I honor all teachers.
Slowly, more and more principals are locking in on this idea we will publicize their schools. Having second-graders share their special view of the world is a hoot for me. I always learn something.
As I burn away the bad habits and make room for new good habits, I welcome 2003. I have always, upon reflection, liked every year Ive lived. Maybe I didnt like it so much as I went through it, but I am always happy to make it to the end of another lap of life.
Please keep sharing the ride with us. Keep in touch. This is, after all, your newspaper.
