PLYMOUTH A New Years present arrived for the Goshen College Maple Leafs baseball team specifically for the young pitching rotation with the signing of Plymouth High School graduate Eric Teall.
Teall has been attending Vincennes for the fall semester of this year, but decided to transfer to Goshen for the second semester and the baseball season.
Goshen is just closer to my family, so my parents will be able to come to my games, Teall said about his reasons for transferring. My grandparents also live on the other side of the Goshen baseball field, so my grandma said I could come over for food.
Goshen Head Coach Brent Hoober is also excited to be getting Teall, after trying to recruit him as a senior at Plymouth.
I recruited him his senior year, but he decided to attend Vincennes, Hoober explained. Then I got a call this fall semester asking if Id still be interested in him, and you better believe that I would love to have him on campus.
Hoober is looking to place Teall right into his starting rotation. Hoober is excited about this season because his team is so young. Teall will be the third freshman starting pitcher on the team and the fourth starter is only a sophomore.
I say that this is an exciting time at Goshen because we are so young, Hoober commented. We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores, and a lot of good young talent.
Teall will join the Maple Leafs after posting an 22-3 record during his three varsity seasons at Plymouth.
The 6-1, 182-pound right-hander had a career ERA at Plymouth of 1.03, while also batting .430 for his junior and senior seasons.
Teall was named MVP of the team his junior and senior seasons and was also named to the Indiana North-South All-Star Team following his senior campaign.
He is one of the top five pitchers in the state, so we are definitely excited to get him, Hoober explained.
Hes a pretty well-rounded 19-year old. He throws in the mid-80s and tops out in the high 80s. His curveball also has good bite, and we will work to develop his change-up.
Teall will also get the chance to face a couple of his old Plymouth teammates with his transfer to Goshen. Teall is looking forward to facing Zack Scott who is playing for Manchester College and Derek Birchmeyer of Ancilla College.
Those are two games that Im going to be sure that I will be pitching, Teall joked.
