Bremen Girls Bopped Again

BREMEN In a game that was definitely winnable for Bremen's girls basketball team, the Lions were unable to take advantage Thursday night.
Coach Marty Huber's squad shot 15-of-47 from the field, including a 1-of-14 stretch in the third quarter that was too much to overcome in a 53-42 non-conference loss to Concord at Bremen High School.
The win improves coach Lyle Gaff's Minutemen to 5-6 while the Lions fall to 6-6 heading into next Friday's Northern State Conference game against LaVille.
Gaff had his team play a 2-3 zone most of the night.
But Bremen's third quarter troubles revolved around its inability to put the ball in the hole. The shots the Lions took were great ones, the ball simply wouldn't fall through the basket.
"We executed our zone offense, it just wouldn't go in the hole," Huber said. "Some days they go in and some days they don't."
Gaff scouted Bremen when the Lions played in the Bremen Holiday Tournament and came away impressed.
"I scouted them over Christmas," he said. "And I told my wife that these guys are good. They're a quality team and they're coached very well. My guess is that they had an off night."
The player that stood out and hurt Bremen the most was senior Jenna Barghahn. Barghahn nailed five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 17 points.
Barghahn nailed two 3-pointers in the third quarter. The second came when Concord broke a full-court press and Barghahn was open on the left wing.
"She hit those two 3s on us," Huber said. "And that came from us not recognizing who had the ball and not getting out on her.
Fellow senior Andrea Jenkins added 12, junior Leslie Pollack 10 and senior Kelly Hale nine.
"I thought everybody that played tonight played really well," Gaff said. "They hustled. We've had some mental breakdowns. But we're pleased we're finally getting over that."
Kelsey Lakins had 12 points to lead Bremen. Senior Leslie Yeager finished with eight points off the bench, including a half-court shot at the end of the first quarter. Adriane Bollenbacher had seven.
Starting guards Lindsey Huber and Kayla Bixel combined for three points.
"We didn't get much out of perimeter," Huber said.
Concord led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter and 25-23 after Bollenbacher grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at the first half buzzer.
"One of the things that we said at halftime was that the reason why the game was so close was because we weren't rebounding real well," Gaff said. "We made the adjustment in the zone."
While the Lions struggled from the field in the third quarter, the Minutemen took advantage and opened up a 35-27 lead.
Concord would stretch its lead to 11 twice in the fourth quarter. Bremen cut the margin to seven late, but that was the closest the Lions would get.
Bremen held on to win a thriller in the JV game, 41-40.
