Accident victim (and baby) Doing Just Fine

BREMEN After being involved in a two-car collision on Christmas night, Bonnie Hickey and her unborn baby are at home and doing fine.

My whole body has just been really sore, Hickey said about her condition. Ive only been able to leave my house twice since the accident. Once was to go to see the doctor and the other time was to check on the other person in my car.

The passenger in the car was Daniel Carroll, of Plymouth, who had his back broken in three different places and also suffered a severely sprained foot that has kept him on crutches.

Hickey was able to get through the accident with a broken neck (that will keep her in a neck brace for six months), slight concussion and various bumps and bruises.

Hickey was traveling south on US 31 when she hit a patch of icy slush on the west end of the highway, causing her to slide into the path of Kay Williams, who was traveling north on the highway.

Luckily for all involved in the accident Phillip Crone, of North Liberty, and Ron Anders, of Lakeville, were able to help save them.

I dont know how long it was before help came, but it wasnt more than five or six minutes, hickey said.

When I went and look at the car, it was burned to nothing.

Crone and Anders were able to pull Carroll out of the burning Ford Cougar before anything serious happened to him.

Hickey was taken by ambulance to the St. Joseph Medical Center in Plymouth, where she was given a CAT scan.

She was then taken to South Bend to spend the night before going home. She was to get an ultrasound this week, to insure that the unborn child is fine.

The doctors in Plymouth checked its heartbeat and said that everything was fine, Hickey said. The ultrasound is just to be certain.
