Chamber President Has Hometown Pride
By Holly Heller
BREMEN Newly-elected Bremen Chamber of Commerce President Steve Weaver is full of good ideas to promote Bremen.
In accepting the nomination for president at the Dec. 17 board meeting, he listed about a dozen of those ideas, ranging from Hispanic and Amish outreach to concentrated efforts on improving and promoting Homespun Holidays.
Bremens location in the county and relationship to South Bend requires all Bremen business people to be focused and driven to make Bremen a success story. Were really kind of on our own. The unity of the board and challenge to take risks and look at where we want to be is the secret to Bremens growth and success.
Beginning in January, Weaver plans to work closely with the two new vice presidents Mike Schultz and Ron Zeltwanger in making his ideas into reality. Schultz, manager of Prince Agri Products, serves as a representative for local industry, while Zeltwanger will focus on economic development.
Janet Abbott was re-elected as treasurer and Phyllis Van De Keere continues to serve in her role as secretary and liaison to the town of Bremen.
Forming subcommittees and developing a budget are on the agenda for 2003, along with outreach to industry and exploring the possibilities of grant money.
A board member since August, Steve brings 23 years of small business ownership experience to the Chamber as co-owner of Village Scribe Printing.
Ive attended meetings off and on over the years, but only recently felt I could contribute as a board member.
He became more involved with the Chamber as part of his efforts to launch a farmers market in Bremen.
The support and interest of the Chamber of Commerce was very reassuring and it gave me the opportunity to say yes to becoming a board member.
The Chamber recently sponsored Steve as a participant in Leadership Marshall County, and Steve hopes to use his new skills to help the Chamber in return.
Im looking forward to using the information and contacts through this program to create and enhance the long-term development and growth of Bremen.
He points out the importance of becoming involved in the Chamber.
Anyone wishing to get involved with the Chamber of Commerce is welcome to attend lunch meetings at the Mint Still at noon on the third Tuesday of each month.
