Koontz Lake Fire Chief Guilty of Voyeurism
Pilot News Staff Report
KNOX The Koontz Lake Fire Chief has been convicted of voyeurism in Knox City Court.
Jeffrey Randall Collins will not do any time in jail on the conviction, but he has been placed on probation.
City Court Judge Charles F. Hasnerl sentenced Collins to six months probation and issued a no contact order with the McCormick family, the victims in the case.
Collins was charged with looking into the windows of the Gary McCormick residence. Collins is married to McCormicks sister.
The incident took place earlier this year. The McCormick family hoped to work something out with their family member and Collins, their in-law. When a feud between the family developed and the problem remained unresolved, a complaint was filed against Collins, who has been the Koontz Lake Fire Chief since 1995.
Collins claims he walked by the McCormick home, but did not look into any windows.
One member of the McCormick household said they spotted him peeping in the window and then he quickly walked away from the house.
Hasnerl conducted a bench trial.
After hearing the evidence from both sides, he found Collins guilty of the single count of voyeurism.
The offense is a misdemeanor, which means the Koontz Lake Town Council can retain Collins as a fire chief or terminate him and appoint someone else.
In Indiana no one convicted of a felony can serve a a firefighter or police officer.
