KNOX A Knox man is under arrest for allegedly stabbing a Walkerton man.
The Starke County Sheriffs Department answered a 9-1-1 call around 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 8 and found Michael Berg, 41 of Walkerton, bleeding from an apparent stab wound.
Berg told police that he was stabbed by his brother-in-law.
Berg was treated at Starke Memorial Hospital and released.
William Singleton, 39, was later taken into custody. While being interviewed by police, Singleton, a heart patient, began having chest pains and was taken to Starke Memorial Hospital. He is in Starke County Jail pending a $100,000 bond.
One juvenile and two adult witnesses reported seeing a van pull into the driveway at the victims home. A man exited the van and walked to the drivers door of a PT Cruiser belonging to Berg. They reported hearing a thump, after which Berg came out of his house and yelled something, then ran to the passenger side of the van.
The man then chased Berg to the back of a shed at the residence. The witnesses said they saw the driver return to his van, but did not see Berg return to his house.
Berg reported to police that he climbed a fence and went to the home of a neighbor, who called 9-1-1. Officer Bill Dulin, responding to the call, was assisted by Detective Oscar Cowen. Cowen is now handling the case.
Bergs wife, Josephine, died last year by hanging. It was ruled a suicide by Knox county Coroner Mark Smith. Singleton is married to one of her sisters.
