KNOX Acting Mayor Wil-liam Wakal has been elected by the Starke County Demo-crat Central Committee as mayor. He will fulfill the remainder of the term left by newly elected State Senator Nancy Dembowski.
Wakal and another candidate, Dennis Estock who ran against Dembowski in the primaries of 1999 had filed candidacy. Estock received one vote. The re-maining votes were cast for Wakal. County Chairman Douglas Vessley gave the Oath of Office to Wakal immediately following the caucus.
Estock thanked the committee for the experience and stated that he learned a lot about the caucus process. He plans to contend for the mayoral post in the next election. Wakal will have a full year as mayor.
The committee next will have another caucus, to re-place Wakal on the Knox City Council. Wakal vacated his post as councilman when he accepted the position of mayor.
That caucus will be Jan. 28t the Knox Community Center, at 2 p.m.
Interested candidates must be a resident of the 4th District Council Ward of the City of Knox and file a Declaration of Candidacy with Vessley at least 72 hours
before the caucus. As that is a Tuesday, the deadline would be 2 p.m. next Friday. Dec-larations of Candidacy should be sent to 301 E. Garden St., North Judson.
The rules of the procedure will be decided by the Com-mittee at the Caucus. Only the committee persons are eligible to vote. Vice-committee persons may vote by proxy if Vessley is notified in writing 72hours before the caucus.
