Teen Mom, Baby Recovering From Crash

By Stacey Creasy

PLYMOUTH Brandie J. Tomblin, 19, recently held her baby for the first time since a traffic accident which almost claimed both their lives.

She was so happy to see and hold her baby, said Tomblins grandmother, Adra Fisher of Plymouth.

Tomblin remains in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth. Hospital officials said Tomblin is listed as critical but stable condition. She was originally in guarded condition following her Jan. 9 crash.

The accident occurred about 8:10 a.m. According to police Tomblin was west bound on Lincoln Highway near King Road when she apparently went off the north side of the roadway. Police believe she swerved her car to the south, lost control of the vehicle, went off the south side of the road, rolled her car which came to rest on its top.

Tomblin and her son Dylan owe their lives to a pair of UPS employees who were among the first to arrive at the scene of the accident.

Duane Mattix and Shawn Reed pulled the toddler from the vehicle and stayed with Tomblin until emergency crews arrived on the scene.

Fisher said the entire family is thankful Reed and Mattix were at the scene. Tomblin was taking the infant to Fishers home to baby-sit when she crashed her vehicle.

Were glad they took the baby out of the car, Fisher added. He was scared but wasnt hurt at all. Thank God she had him tied in so good.

The crash provides additional evidence car restraints save lives. When the vehicle rolled, Dylan remained in the car seat and was sitting there, upside down when Mattix and Reed arrived.

Fisher said Tomblin suffered a fractured collar bone, broken spleen, a bruised lung, broken finger and thumb. Fisher also believes Tomblin owes her life to the fact she was wearing a seat belt.

Now that Dylan can visit Tomblin in her ICU room, everyone is happy. Fisher believes Tomblin will be in the hospital for another week to 10 days.
