With the sectionals for girls high school basketball a little more than two weeks away, one conference title is locked up, but two others are still to be determined. Here is a look at what lies ahead for the girls bball scene.
NLC teams prep for Sectionals
Warsaw (16-1, 5-0) has sewed up the Northern Lakes Conference title with two league games to play. Three teams however, are tied for second place, the Plymouth Lady Pilgrims being one of them.
No one will catch Warsaw, said PHS head coach Dave Cox. NorthWood (10-7, 3-2) still has them, but even with one loss, they will win it. It is rare when two losses wins conference.
NorthWood is one of the teams tied with Plymouth for the second spot in the standings. Wawasee, after losing to the Lady Pilgrims Saturday in double overtime, are the other.
The schedule favors Plymouth as their two remaining NLC games are against Northridge (4-13, 1-4) and Goshen (6-11, 2-3).
Having won four out of their last five, coupled with the return of sophomore guard Stacey Wendel and Saturdays big win, Cox is hoping his team will continue to gain momentum before sectional play begins Feb. 11.
Thursday nights game against the Lady Raiders will be Plymouths Senior Night. It has been Senior Night the last couple of games as upperclassmen guards Morgan Uceny and Sarah Craig have been a big reason for the teams late season success.
Even with four players departing after this season (Cassie Gantz and Shannon Gehrke are the other two seniors), good things appear to be on the horizon for Plymouth as the junior varsity has a record of 16-1.
Bremen, Triton battle for NSC title, O-D leads NAC
With identical 4-1 conference records, Bremen and Triton are tied atop the NSC standings. Both have two league games left with Jimtown (6-10, 0-5) as one of the opponents. That means Bremens game against New Prairie, exactly one week after defeating them in the Bi-County finale, should decide the outcome.
The Lady Lions are playing their best ball of the season. Bremen is getting fine play from all nine players, and the addition of shooting guard Kaci Disher makes them even more difficult to handle.
Triton, coming off a decisive win over Plymouth recently, has LaVille as its other conference game. The Lady Trojans will host Oregon-Davis (No. 6, Class A) on Feb. 6. The game was originally scheduled for Nov. 16, but was postponed due to Tritons run to the final four in volleyball.
Seniors Ashli Senff and Gina Westafer are leading Tritons offense and Carly Feldman has stepped up as a threat in the low post in the Trojans last couple of games.
Culver and LaVille are two of the three teams tied for second with 3-2 NSC marks. They play each other at Culver this Saturday. The Lady Cavs (No. 11, Class A), led by slick senior Stacy Stevens, travel to O-D for what should be an entertaining non-conference game Wednesday night.
The frontrunning Lady Bobcats (13-4, 3-0) will host the Northland second-place team, South Central (8-9, 3-1), on Feb. 4. The Lady Dragons from Argos also sit at 3-1 in the NAC. They play at home two of their final three games, with a visit to LaVille Thursday.
Look for North Judson to hit the Class 2A top ten again soon. The Lady Jays (11-6) have won two straight and should win their final three games to go into sectionals with an impressive 14-6 record against strong competition.
