Theres a first time for everything.
Wednesday was the first time someone robbed a bank in Nappanee.
It is the first bank robbery that I am aware of in the history of Nappanee, said Nappanee Police Chief Mike Anglin, who has been with the police department for 17 years. In the 1970s, there was a guy from Nappanee who robbed a bank, but he robbed a bank in Milford.
Anglin said about 12:15 p.m. a lone male entered the Key Bank, at 161 E. Market St.
The suspect approached the teller and advised her he had a bomb, and he would detonate it if she did not give him her money.
The teller did not give the suspect the money. He fled the bank without receiving any money. No explosive devices or weapons were displayed during the incident. No one was injured
Anglin said the suspect is a white male approximately 6-feet tall, who weighs approximately 170 pounds. He has light brown or blonde hair, blue eyes and was wearing boots, carpenter-type bluejeans, and a brown fleece shirt with a zipper front.
The suspect could have left the scene in small, older white pick up truck. No license plate was identified.
The first time someone decided to rob a Nappanee bank the suspect did not end up with any cash.
Anglin told The Pilot News his department is pursuing several leads. The charges would be bank robbery, a federal crime.
We do not have anything yet, but we hope to, he added.
The Indiana State Police assisted the Nappanee Police Department at the scene.
Anybody with information should call Detective Brook Germann at the Nappanee Police Department (574) 773-4111.
