Carmean Benefit Does Swell
By Stacey Creasy
PLYMOUTH By all accounts, the Carmean fund-raiser Sunday was a huge success.
The First United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church co-sponsored a a baked potato and salad bar at the Knights of Columbus Hall to assist the Carmean family with medical costs associated with Karens brain cancer.
Karen fought a courageous battle against the cancer, but died two days before the event. She was still with them, in spirit.
Rev. Dean Fager with the First United Methodist Church said, The fund-raiser was a huge success. We sold about 900 tickets and fed somewhere around 800 people. There were also people who gave donations at the door in addition to their ticket.
Rev. Fager along with Rev. Maurice Grindle of the Trinity United Methodist Church, along with Joelyn May, Ruth Van Vactor, Dan Tupps and Beth Pinkerton are the committee members who organized the fund-raiser.
Fager gave most of the credit to Van Vactor for the successful event.
We would not have been able to pull this off without Ruth Van Vactor, Fager added. There were a lot of people who worked hard on this, but Ruth is the reason it was a success.
Van Vactor, in turn credited all the people who turned out to support the Carmean family.
We did feed more than 800 people, Van Vactor said. Everything was donated, so every dime went to the Carmean family. I feel like it was a great success.
The goal was to raise $6,000. Van Vactor did not have exact numbers, but she knows the churches and the volunteers reached the goal.
We still have some donations coming in so I do not know how much we raised all together, Van Vactor stated.
The community is going to continue to work to help the Carmean family due to the massive medical bills.
Van Vactor said the local Masons are having a port-a-pit chicken fund-raiser from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. March 22 in the Edward Jones parking lot on North Michigan Street.
One-half of the proceeds from that will go to the Carmean family, Van Vactor explained.
The other half will go to their childrens community project. Every year they pick a cause. This year they decided to help the Carmean family.
Van Vactor said the events show how people turn out to help one another, even during tough economical times.
That is one of the reasons why I love living in a small community like Plymouth, she said.
