Stevens Enjoys Indy Experience

By Ken Peterson

INDIANAPOLIS Known throughout Marshall County as two of the area's best basketball players, two high school seniors from the Northern State Conference spent this weekend in Indianapolis trying out for another team.

Triton's Ashli Senff and Culver Community's Stacy Stevens were invited from over 1,600 seniors throughout Indiana to Indianapolis Ben Davis High School for the Hoosier Basketball Magazine Top 40 workouts.

The workouts are held annually as part of the selection of the best Indiana basketball players that will compete in the Indiana-Kentucky All-Star game this summer. One game will take place in Lexington, the other in Indianapolis.

Invitees got to participate in a variety of drills. On defense, the girls went through full-court man-to-man defense, half-court man-to-man defense and zone defense.

"The first 25 minutes of practice consisted of drills," Senff said.

The head coach of the girls team is Alan Vickrey from North Central High School in Indianapolis. The six assistant coaches are Amy Cherubini (Pike), Doug Curtis (Angola), Steve Ford (Lewis Cass), Kent Gentrup (North Vermillion), Janis Hert (Vincennes Lincoln) and Missy Voyles (North Harrison).

"I don't think I played well," Senff said. "It was fun. You got to play with a lot of girls that you don't play against. It was a good experience."

For Stevens, selected an alternate to the team, she was happy for the opportunity.

"It was a lot of fun," she said. "It was an incredible amount of talent (at the tryouts). All of the girls are solid in every aspect of the game. It was fun, but it was serious. (The workouts) were intense and fast paced."

Other players participating were Katie Gearlds (from Class 3A state champion Beech Grove and Purdue signee), Margaret Batteast (SB Washington), Amanda DeVries (Kankakee Valley), Suntana Granderson (SB Riley), Crystal Norman (SB Riley), and Allison Lindborg (SB St. Josephs).

The announcement of the team takes place in a couple of weeks.
