French to honor World War II Vets

By Stacey Creasy

World War II veterans who participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy or who took part in the Liberation of France will be honored by the French Consul General during a special ceremony July 19 in Logansport.

The event will be conducted at the All Saints Catholic Church in Logansport. It is slated to begin at 1 p.m. Doors open at 11 a.m.

The ceremony is part of a four-part program sponsored by the Indiana Veterans Service Officers Association in coordination with the French Embassy in Chicago.

World War II veterans who reside in this area are urged to attend the ceremony.

Vern Jackson, Marshall County Veterans Service Officer, said he does not know how many World War II veterans are left.

They are dying very quickly, Jackson said. It is hard to keep track. I get my information from the state veterans office.

Jackson said each vet who submits an application will receive a Thank-you-America certificate. Vets who have already submitted an application do not need to reapply. Veterans that do not receive an invitation to the event by July 1 should contact the French Embassy (312) 787-5359.

Local officials are also expected to make the trip as a show of support.

Jackson is not aware of any local plans to honor World War II veterans.
