Commissioners Vote To Build Bridge
By Stacey Creasy
Marshall County Commissioners voted Monday to build a new railroad bridge on Rose Road.
The commissioners conducted a special session to discuss the bridge construction. Marshall County Highway Superintendent Neal Haeck, county surveyor Larry Fisher and county attorney Jim Cleven-ger attended the meeting to discuss the bridge and contract.
The bridge is located on Rose Road, south of US 30. The county has received a number of complaints about the old wooden bridge, which is located near a sharp turn on Rose Road.
The bridge can only handle one lane of traffic at a time.
Marshall County Auditor Jan Quivey said a special session was held to make sure the county secured the services of Beer and Slabaugh, the construction company that recently built the new bridge on Oak Road close to LaVille Junior/Senior High School. The commissioners wanted to reach an agreement before the construction company left the area.
The timber bridge will cost $342,137 to build. The county must pay CSX Railroad $116,197 up front.
They (CSX) have to have that money for engineering costs, flagmen, other costs, before they will even start the project, Haeck stated.
Clevenger said the county will likely receive some of the $116,197 back.
The new bridge will be located about 30 feet west of the current structure, which will help with the sharp turn near the old bridge. Once the project begins, traffic may be altered in the area.
The road will be closed at times, Haeck explained, when they have to have heavy equipment in the road.
Commissioner John Zentz said he wants the road closure held to a minimum.
The commissioners signed the contract Monday. Beer and Slabaugh must also sign the agreement. Clevenger estimated work on the bridge will begin in about a month. The project should be completed by the end of the summer.
The Oak Road bridge has been finished. Haeck said the only thing left is work by the county highway department on the road near the bridge.
