Commissioners Vote On Comprehensive Emergency Plan

By Stacey Creasy

The Marshall County Commissioners are hoping to obtain a grant to update the local Comprehensive Emergency Plan.

The commissioners voted Monday during a special session to apply for a $16,534 grant in order to conduct the update.

The county wants to review the terrorism and weapons of mass destruction plan for the county. The state and federal government have mandated counties to have plans in place.

Marshall County Commis-sion President Kevin Overmyer said the update to the plans will be done in-house which is why the county is applying for the grant.

After the meeting, The Pilot News asked Overmyer what action will be taken concerning the records at the local Emer-gency Management Agency of-fice.

Last week, the Local Emer-gency Management Planning Committee passed a resolution asking the commissioners to take any action necessary to recover missing records from the EMA office.

In December, the commissioners voted not to renew the contract of former EMA Director Norm Long. After the action was taken, county officials at-tempted to obtain the keys to the building from Long who informed the commissioners his last day on the job was Dec. 31.

When county officials finally gained access to the EMA office, they allege all the records had been taken from the office. They also allege information stored in the computer was erased.

The committee has appointed Kent Borggren to serve as action director until a new EMA director is hired.

Overmyer said county attorney Jim Clevenger has sent two letters to Long, asking about the records, but has not received a response.

Long said he cannot comment on the situation, but noted he does not know what records he is supposed to have taken. Long said personal items were the only things he removed from the office.
