MISHAWAKA The Bre-men girls track team pulled out a dramatic victory Monday night at Marian High School. The boys had a tough meet.
The girls of Coach Kim Kincaid recorded a thrilling 64-59 victory, winning the meet in the final event, the 1,600-meter relay.
Tricia Graverson, Meredith Scott, Paola Montes and Rachael Phillips put the exclamation point on the win.
The Knights were able to defeat the young Lions 76 1/2 -55 1/2 in the boys meet.
Kincaids squad overcame first-meet jitters.
This was our first meet and we had some errors, Kincaid said. But there were some girls that had to step up for us and fill in some gaps. And they did it without complaining.
Phillips, a senior, also won the 200 and 400. Kelsey Nielsen and Hannah Prawat finished 1-2 in the 1,600-meter run. Nielsen won in 5:59.60 and Prawat came in at 6:23.54. Graverson scored in the 400 and the 400 relay.
Alli Gurback was second in e 200.
Nielsen also won the 3,200-meter run (12:57.50) and teammate Melissa Burcham was third.
Sarah Gumz and Lenna Staiger finished 1-2 in the 300 low hurdles.
In the field, Liz Scott and Gurback won the high jump and long jump, respectively. Gurback also finished second in the 100 and Meredith Scott was second in the 800.
Meredith ran that 800 with all she had, Kincaid said. We knew the meet was tight and we told them that if they wanted it, they had to step up and they were motivated.
Also, Stefany Workman was second in the shot put, Brittany Lafferty second in the high jump and Holly Farrer second in the discus.
The win is a significant one for the Bremen program. Kin-caid has 21 athletes out for track. Of those 15 are either freshman or sophomores.
For a few of my girls, when they crossed the (finish) line, they were like, Whoa, look what I did., Kincaid said.
I think we had some runners that went out too fast. The ones that are experienced they know how to slow the reins a little bit. But the ones that arent have had success in junior high and so they know where they stand now.
Despite the loss, boys coach Rich Moren has plenty of positives to build on for his team.
Moren had some fine efforts turned in during the field events. Travis LaVine won the shot put with a 45-9 effort. Alex Malone went 18-101/2 to win the long jump.
Jesse Atkins and Dylan Morse went 2-3 in the high jump while Adam Young and Matt Turpin finished second in the long jump and discus, respectively.
Steve Snick and Morse finished 2-3 in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Snick redeemed himself in the 300-meter low hurdles and won in 46.40. Cory Creighton was second.
Patrick Gumz led the pack to take first in the 800-meter run, winning in 2:17.10.
Brad Leeper nosed out Marians Zach Brettnacher to win the 100-meter dash. Teammate Alex Malone finished third.
A.J. Sime finished second in the 1,600-meter run and Adam Young third in the 400.
Brad Leeper won the 200 and Matt Turpin was third. Nate Beron finished second in the 3,200.
