PLYMOUTH The em-ployees at St. Josephs Regional Medical Center Plymouth Campus are jumping into the effort to send a little bit of Michiana to the troops in the Middle East.
Karin Hobgood, media and public relations coordinator for Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Inc., said employees from the Plymouth hospital are taking up a collection for the troops overseas.
These items will be packaged and shipped to the troops by family members of Company C. 152nd Infantry 1st Platoon of Plymouth.
Approximately 47 servicemen from the Plymouth area are with the 152nd.
Their family members have organized as The Family Readiness Group of Plymouth. They will pick up the first of the donations later this week or Monday.
Hobgood said the response has been above and beyond the call of duty.
The response has been terrific, Hobgood said. We have six boxes already. The employees have done a great job.
The collection box is located in our Human Resources De-partment. The hospital plans to collect donations for those serving our country on a continuing basis as the need presents.
The intent of this project is to supply as many troops with these items as possible.
These are items that are hard to come by over there, Hobgood added.
Many of the soldiers have been pushing their way across Iraq. It has been weeks since they have had any of the comforts many of us take for granted. It may be weeks before they are back on safe soil.
Some troops were camped today 35 miles outside of Baghdad, waiting for the major ground battles to begin.
The items being collected: Sunscreen, Chapstick, disposable razors, travel size toiletry items, AT&T; phone cards, magazines/books, stationery/en-velopes, non-perishable goodies (beef jerky, cookies, candy), letters of support, baby powder, non-aerosol deodorant, wet wipes and car air fresheners.
There are a number of organizations preparing packages for troops. The American Red Cross, for instance, is wrapping up its drive.
The effort put together by hospital employees will put the packages in the hands of local soldiers.
