Red Cross Needs New Heroes
PLYMOUTH The Marshall County Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for a few heroes to come to the rescue.
In the Heroes for the American Red Cross campaign, a Hero is somebody willing to raise $1,000 for the local chapter of the Red Cross.
Right now, the Red Cross needs three dozen heroes to help the local branch with its $35,000 budget shortfall.
We need to meet that budget shortfall to keep this chapter going, to keep all the programs we offer, said Harriet Wilson, executive director of the Marshall County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Wilson said a Heroes Committee has been put together to identify and recruit heroes.
Dan Marohn will serve as the chair of the committee. The co-chairs are John Marohn, Sarah Smith, Paul Wendell and Wilson.
We will meet on Wednes-day to discuss committee members, Wilson added. The committee members will be in charge of finding heroes. We are hoping to find 36 heroes.
The committee and the heroes will conduct a breakfast meeting April 21 at the First United Methodist Church in Plymouth. That is when the fast and furious campaign to raise the funds will begin.
The goal is to raise the $35,000 by May 12.
The heroes can raise the $1,000 any way they choose, said Wilson.
As an example, she said one person is thinking about a 5K walk to raise the money while another is looking at a raffle to generate $1,000.
As long as it is legal, it is OK with the Red Cross.
Wilson said the Heroes program will achieve one other goal it will show the citizens of Marshall County what the Red Cross does for the community as well as the voids that would be left behind if the local chapter has a budget shortfall.
The local chapter of the Red Cross does much more than collect blood. Wilson said the Red Cross is the first agency to help local families when there is a fire. They operate a local food pantry. They train lifeguards for public pools, and have a program that enables local relatives to reach people in the military in times of emergency.
The Red Cross also teaches CPR and other health-related programs.
Most people do not realize what all we do, Wilson stated. We are hoping this program will not only raise the money we need, but put people in touch with what we do for the community.
On May 12, Wilson said Christos will sponsor a celebration luncheon for the committee and its heroes.
