Academy Lacrosse is Boss

CULVER Theres not much Peter McLean cant do with a lacrosse stick.

He displayed all his skills Saturday afternoon.

McLean scored three goals and assisted on two others as Culver Academy defeated Bloomfield Hills (MI), 6-4.

Peter had a wonderful game. He has a great shot, Eagles coach John Yeager said.

The senior midfielder broke a 1-1 tie at the 6:39 mark in the second quarter when his shot from the left side of the box was deflected and rolled in. Bloomfield knotted the game at 2-2 four minutes before halftime on a score by attacker Victor Semelsberger.

It was a close first half, Bloomfield coach Brian Kaminskas said. Were proud with the way the guys came out, especially in the (cold) weather. They have a great team here at Culver. We love coming down and playing them for the challenge that they give us.

McLean dominated the third quarter, blasting a shot into the right side of the net to start the second half, and firing in another rocket with 9:15 remaining to give Culver Academy a 4-2 lead heading to the fourth.

A goal by Joel Ferguson on Bloomfields first possession of the last quarter brought the visitors to within one. Kaminskas squad had numerous chances to pull even during the next seven minutes, but failed to convert.

McLean, who began the quarter on the sidelines, returned with five minutes left, and set up attackers Jon Graves and Clay Lewis for back-to-back goals in an eight-second span to put the game away. Semelsberger added his second score of the game 70 seconds later.

Graves tallied two goals for the Eagles, and senior goalie Will Lee registered 17 saves.

I dont think we played that well today, Yeager said. Our defense was better. I think what we did better today was try to control the ball more on offense. Were still a little weak and impatient with our transition game. I think just giving us another week of practice will help us with that.

Culver Academy will need plenty of preparation as it gets set to face IHSLA (Indiana High School Lacrosse Association) power Zionsville next Friday.

They have a very strong attack and a very good goalie, Yeager said. Theyre the team to beat in league.
