Defibrillators Praised

By Stacey Creasy

PLYMOUTH The Automatic External Defibrillators in county squad cars have saved lives during the past two years.

That is why the Marshall County Commissioners did not hesitate to enter into a maintenance contract for the AEDs.

The commissioners approv-ed Marshall County Sheriff Bob Ruffs request for a maintenance contract.

The Physio Control company will maintain and repair county AEDs for $1,440 each year.

Ruff said each one of the county squad cars has an AED. Last year, detective Sgt. Ward Byers saved the life of a Culver man with an AED. It was a case in which the victim would not have survived the ambulance ride to the hospital in Plymouth.

These are life-saving devices, Ruff told the commissioners. The batteries are starting to go bad on them and they are about $300 each.

For $1,440 per year Physio Control will make sure the squad cars have charged AEDs.

As part of the contract, they take care of everything on the AED, Ruff added.

Commissioner John Zentz said he would like to have an AED in the Marshall County Building.

As many people as we have coming in and out of here each day in addition to the employees, I think it would be a good idea, said Zentz said.

He said he thought of the idea after reading an article in The Pilot News about an elderly man who suffered a heart attack during a basketball game at Oregon-Davis.

The 74-year-old man was revived and survived the heart attack.

Ruff said he will obtain the information about an AED for the county building.

In other business, the commissioners approved a request by Ruff to keep three gas credit cards for use when one of the cars is on a long-distance haul.

I can take advantage of much cheaper gas that way, Ruff said.

The county is cutting its credit cards and opening accounts with local gas stations, who give the county a three-cent per gallon cut in price. However, there are times on long-distance trips when the cards may be needed or gas can be purchased at a lower rate.
