Board considers full-day kindergarten

BOURBON The Triton School Board started their April round of meetings with a discussion led by Superintendent Ted Chittum on the concept of all-day kindergarten.

Chittum reported on the school's intention to begin full-day kindergarten, perhaps as early as the next school season.

The school has two kindergarten teachers, with a third needed if full-day kindergarten is implemented.

The full day would work by assigning qualified students half the day with the new literacy teacher, then the other half day with a kindergarten teacher.

The new teacher would, in essence, be teaching two different classes during the day, taking some from the morning classes and some from the afternoon classes.

Elementary principal Tom Bowers presented the board with the job description for the full-day kindergarten literacy teacher.

The description says the successful applicant must . . . plan and organize developmentally appropriate instruction for the class, conduct home visits and have a knowledge to use Literacy Collaborative framework.

The meeting opened with Athletic Director Mike Byron announcing receipt of a donation, $1,500, from Dave Gould and the Athletic Booster Club.

"I would just like to thank the booster club and express our appreciation for all the work they do," Byron said.

"The pictures they take, the buttons and meals for the athletes are all appreciated."

The board also approved the hiring of Elizabeth Miller as a junior high softball coach.

The board also approved the annual motion to apply for Title I, Title II and any other grant that the school may be eligible to receive.

Chittum also reported the school was awarded a grant to purchase two Automated External Defibrillators; Chittum said he thinks they need one more.

The board also approved the senior class field trip to Chicago and approved the motion to let seniors have two days off immediately preceding graduation.
