Resolution honors park as first Dark-Sky Preserve

INDIANAPOLIS State Senator Kent Adams (R-Warsaw) recognized the Potawatomi Wildlife Park as Indianas first Dark-Sky Preserve in a Senate Resolution March 31.

Light pollution is a growing problem in our communities, said Adams. The wildlife park sets a great example for the rest of the state in controlling unnecessary light sources.

Senate Resolution 7 honored the Potawatomi Wildlife Park for its promotion of wise lighting principles in their educational outreach programs to the community. The Park has developed programs for curriculum with area schools and has been a haven for local and regional astronomical societies escaping light pollution from urban areas.

Since the early 1990s, the Potawatomi Wildlife Park has had in effect a policy promoting the wise use of lighting. The lighting policy dictates utilizing full cutoff lighting practices where needed, removing unnecessary lighting where it already exists, and not installing any additional lighting where it is not needed, according to Michael Stephan, the Park Manager. The implementation of this policy has made the Park the first official Dark-Sky Preserve in the state of Indiana, as officially recognized by the Indiana Council on Outdoor Lighting Education and the International Dark-Sky Association.

The Potawatomi Wildlife Park is a 200-acre complex that consists of fields, woodlands, ponds and wetlands and is bordered by the Tippecanoe River. The Park is managed as a natural sanctuary for plants and animals of northern Indiana.

Adams represents Senate District 9, which includes portions of Elkhart, Kosciusko, Marshall and St. Joseph counties.
