BOURBON This year the uniforms at the Bourbon Police Department have a new look.
The department has adopted a new design for its shoulder patch.
The new design was created by Lori Johnson of Tippecanoe. In the background is the American flag symbolizing freedom. Representing the nation is the American Bald Eagle. Recognizing the state is the Seal of the State of Indiana. The depiction at the town level is an old, wooden pump.
For the bicentennial celebration in 1976, the Betsy Ross Club held a contest to design a flag for Bourbon. The winner of the contest and designer for the flag was Jo McCollough, who was an eighth grader and the daughter of Dale and Judy McCollough of Bourbon. The council adopted the pump design as a symbol for the town flag.
The new patch is the fourth one for the department. The previous designs werent nearly as busy. The first two were only golden words (Bourbon Police Department). The third patch was very creative, but still wasnt as flamboyant.
It is very colorful, commented Bourbon Police Chief John West.
The bold color scheme stands out on the dark cloth of the police uniform. It is a very bright contrast to the dark background.
