Show Your Support Colors

PLYMOUTH While American soldiers are overseas, fighting to liberate Iraq, folks in the States have been trying to show their support, be it with flags presented by The Pilot News for display in the window or yellow ribbons tied around trees, citizens are going for a visual show.

Now there is another way to show support for our troops.

John Snyder, a Plymouth native and Vietnam veteran, came up with an idea to make yellow ribbons out of steel.

The ribbons are designed with a spike, so they can be placed into the ground as a yard sign. He also produces versions that can be hung, for a building or attaching to a tree.

The ribbons are made at American Artwork Incorpor-ated, in Elkhart, and can be purchased there or at The Trading Post in Plymouth.

I do some sales work with American Artwork, they cut golf scenes and other athletic stuff out of metal, Snyder explained. My wife had breast cancer, so I asked about making some pink ribbons, then after the war broke out I asked about making some yellow ones.

The ribbons were just made available last week. Snyder says they have been selling well so far.

The ribbons are powder coated, so they are able to withstand the weather elements outside, Snyder said. You can keep them forever to support troops and the military at anytime.

Snyder, a retired teacher of 30 years from the Bremen School Corporation, wants the soldiers putting their lives on the line to know the homefolks support them, much the same way he felt in Vietnam.

I just want to be able to show support for the troops, and (the ribbons) make a nice lawn display, Snyder explained.

As a veteran, it really means a lot to me.

The lawn ribbons can be purchased for $18 from Snyder himself, as he travels with a few in his vehicle at all times. He can be contacted at 936-3870. There are also smaller ribbons that sell for $6, which can be placed in windows. If youd like to see one on display, come by The Pilot News Michigan Street office and see the one on display on our Wall of Honor.
