Savill Leads Triton to Opening Win

By Paul Dendiu

HAMLET The Oregon-Davis baseball team had to wait five extra days to open its baseball season after dates against Elkhart Baptist and Morgan Township were canceled.

Thanks to Triton, the Bobcats still havent played a full game.

Brett Savill doubled, homered and drove in four runs as Triton cruised to a 15-4 win over Oregon-Davis in five innings Wednesday night.

The Trojans won their season-opener in conditions that more resembled October than April. The chilly temperatures and strong north wind had little effect on Tritons hitting. The visitors had 12 hits, and only gave up three (to pitcher Tony McCallum, and outfielders Josh Thompson and Eric Jensen).

Offensively, we saw some good things, pitching we saw some good things, Triton coach Ted Doty said.

Dotys squad pounded out four straight hits in the first inning. Catcher Bryan Watkins singled home Adam Wanemacher, Savill doubled to score Todd Blackford and starting pitcher Braxton Barton brought Watkins in with a one-out flyout to put Triton up 3-0.

Our guys have gotten a lot stronger over the past year, Doty said. Hopefully, thats going to translate into some balls hit in the gaps and some balls over the fence as well.

Savills three-run blast in the third landed well over the fence, giving the Trojans a comfortable 6-1 advantage.

Anytime you can hit one out with a couple guys on, its big, Doty said. He hit that into a pretty stiff wind. He crushed that ball.

The Bobcats scored three runs of their own in the bottom half of the third. McCallum nailed a one-out double to left centerfield, and O-D proceeded to score two runs on consecutive wild pitches by Barton. Jensen then drove in Thompson with a double to right field to cut the deficit to two.

I was real happy with the first three innings, O-D coach Jeff Sweeney said. We played pretty good defensively and we made nice contact.

Triton made a lot of contact in the fifth. The Trojans sent 12 batters to the plate against pitcher Brandon Ferch. Triton used four hits, three walks and a couple O-D errors to register eight runs.

I was happy with our aggressiveness at the plate, Doty said.

Blackford, Wanemacher and Watkins finished with two hits each, Triton tallied seven stolen bases and Barton struck out four. McCallum had an RBI and fanned three for O-D in the loss.

We have a sophomore shortstop and a freshman second baseman. We made a few errors there and thats going to happen, Sweeney said. Our kids need to be tougher mentally. I think it was just some first game jitters. We made some mistakes, but well make adjustments in practice and hopefully get a little better.
