Plymouth Speedway Ready to Roar

PLYMOUTH In the world of sports, the offseason is the time where most changes are made and racing in Plymouth is no exception. This week, Plymouth Speedway officials announced that over the winter, Al and Barb Bustamante became sole owners of the 3/8 mile paved race track.

We are really excited about this opportunity, said Al Bustamante. This is something that Barb and I have wanted for a long time, and Rick Dawson and Terry Gerstbaurer (former owners ) have been really great in helping to make this happen.

Besides the ownership change, the new owners an-nounced that they will move their weekly racing to Saturday nights. Late Models will still be the premier division, and will be supported by the new Sportsman Division that features many of the same Street Stock teams from years past. Also on the weekly racing card will be the Mini-Stocks and ThunderCars. Outlaw Winged Mini-Sprints and Front-Wheel Drive Hornets are two more new divisions added to the slate of weekly racing.

With the move to Saturday nights came the ability to form an alliance with South Bend Motor Speedway; rules for the Sportsman, Mini Stocks, and ThunderCars will be the same at both speedways.

According to Bustamante, Ive really enjoyed working with Mike Bird at South Bend and as a result, Mike and I are currently working on some incentives for the three divisions that run at both tracks.

In addition to the Saturday night weekly racing program that features six divisions, Plymouth Speedway will be hosting specials on other nights that include the return of the HOSS Outlaw Winged Spring Series, 50-100 lap specials for the regular weekly divisions, the USAC Ford Focus Midget Series, a Monster Truck show with the return of the Blueberry Festival Truck and Tractor Pull, a Rollover Contest, Demolition Derbies and for the first time ever - a Motorcycle Demolition Derby.

The regular show of six exciting divisions, plus some great special events will make this one of the most action packed years in the history of the Speedway, Bustamante added. First and foremost though, we will continue our weekly efforts to run a fast-action, fun-packed and fair racing program.

Pits will open at 3 p.m., practice and hot laps at 4 p.m., qualifying at 5:30 p.m., and racing at 7 p.m.

Practice and registration will be this Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13 from noon until 5 p.m. There will also be open practice for all divisions every Thursday night from 5 p.m. until dark. The track is available for private practice sessions, but you need to call for reservation times.

Opening night will be Saturday, April 19.
